Welcome to St Hilda's

Founded in 1895, three hundred feet above the lake.

St Hilda's Diocesan School was founded by the sisters of the Church Extension Association in 1895, near the lake at Ooty. From six candidates in its very first year, it has grown into a flourishing residential school of around 500 students — a tiny seed grown into a great tree.

Set in the cool, serene heights of the Nilgiri Hills, the school blends a time-tested combination of Christian values and academic excellence, preparing students for the Indian School Certificate while shaping confident, compassionate young people ready to serve the world.

From these hills to the world's stage

St Hilda's alumna Kartiki Gonsalves (Batch of 2004) directed The Elephant Whisperers — the first Indian production to win the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Film.

Her journey is a testament to a belief held here since 1895: that a leader is born in every child, and that careful nurturing and ethical guidance can bring out the individual gifts of every student.
